Default New Firmware For Microsoft Xbox 360 External HD DVD Drive

Microsoft Corp. this week deployed a new firmware for the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player following discontinuation of the product in Feb. The new firmware update is said to include compatibility improvements with certain titles and provide additional support for network features.

Microsoft in Feb. ended production of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player in Feb. following Toshiba Corp.'s announced exit from the HD DVD business.
The peripheral has been price cut at major retailers to move inventory.

Xbox U.K. head Neil Thompson told BBC News this week that Microsoft has no plans to provide a Blu-ray disc option for the Xbox 360.
Instead, it plans to focus on digital content distribution on the 10-million-member Xbox Live online network.

Retailers have slashed HD DVD title pricing to clear inventory.
In Mar., Amazon.com fired a new 60% off HD DVD sale in the latest promotion for the defunct high-definition format.
