BD-R goes to the next level. Industry sources now confirm that Verbatim a division of Mitsubishi Chemical are in production along with a Pioneer partnership for the new generation of BD-R (Bluray recordable media). The current crop of
BD-R discs rely on metal based recording layers much the same as CD-RW technology,
Verbatim has successfully produced dye based recordable Bluray media.
This development has massive implications for the world of recordable media, dye based products although they will require a slight revision to the Bluray standard will allow mass production of the disc with a far lower cost per unit. The current uptake of
Blu-ray BD-R and BD-RE is mainly by games developers and is yet to make a big impact on the mainstream 'backup' market due largely to the high cost of burners and media. The new dye based discs will overcome the cost and by Q4 2008 the market is set to double.
