Default Sony expecting blu-ray to take 50% of the market by end of year

Sony's challenge for Blu-ray is still threefold: competition against standard DVDs, people's wallets and limited selection. The vast majority of optical media in use today for movies is DVD. In both home entertainment centers and PCs, it is the ubiquitous format.

The library of movies available on DVD is vast, and a DVD player can be had for dirt cheap. That said, Sony has starry eyes for its beloved DVD successor and thinks that Blu-ray will become huge this year.

Sony's expectations are for Blu-ray to take 50% of the global market, or more than double the current amount of deployed units today by then end of the year
