Acer unveiled a new Blu-ray laptop, featuring a six speaker setup as its seeks to take a lead in the home entertainment market.
Acer is selling the new Gemstone blue laptops on the 16in and 18.5in screens, which feature 1080p displays meaning that Blu-ray movies no longer feature black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. The top of the line Gemstone blue also features a six speaker setup including subwoofer which Acer claims can deliver "5.1" surround sound. The company is also keen to point out the efforts it has made with partner Dolby to ensure the built in subwoofer does not shake the hard drive or optical drive, disrupting performance. The laptops also feature a large multimedia controller on the left of the keyboard called CineDash, allowing quick access to volume and menu navigation controls. Acer is claiming up to three hours of Blu-ray playback on the 18.4in 8920G and two and a half on the 16in 6920G model. The laptops are powered by Intel's new 45nm Penryn chips and will sell for between $900 and $1700.
