Recordable Bluray (Blu-ray) news

8th February 2010 -

New range of Blank Blu-ray products announced by Verbatim, price changes also on existing bluray media discs.

26th December 2009 -

Blu-ray is taking off in a big way! With manufacturers of associate products such as Amaray struggling to keep up with demand and producers such as Sony mopping up any spare capacity consumable and case suppliers are finding that in the run up to Christmas stocks are already hard to come by.

Royal mail are not aiding the situation as 100's of parcels are caught in limbo meaning a great deal of customer dissatisfaction and higher levels of customer contact are required.

However we feel that Blu-ray manufacturers mean business this Christmas! Ask yourself how many consumers actually realise how much better the Blu-ray experiance is compared to HD DVD? In a survey conducted by DVD-and-Media more than 1500 customers responded, of these 91% did not have the facility to play a Blu-ray disc but thought when HD DVD was compared to Blu-ray that the two formats would be of 'comparable quality' and sited the main reason for not upgrading to the latest format as "The cost is currently too high", some respondants sited 'Sky TV' as their reference point for their quality comparison - meaning they assumed Blu-ray DVD was the same quality as Sky's HD channels!

Of the contingent that posessed a Blu-ray player 42% owned and used a PS3 console and factored into their buying decision the playback capability for Blu-ray when choosing the games console over the competition. With the current crop of Blu-ray players coming in at around the £100 mark they are becoming more affordable - but as with the early DVD player market manufacturers have again 'missed a trick' by not dropping the price of the players quickly enough and making the recordable format widely available - perhaps we will see the £30 Blu-ray player this time next year but in our opinion thats where it needs to be to see the volumes go through the roof. Media manufacturers haven't helped the situation with recordable blu-ray still in the region of £2.50 a disc compared with DVD-R at under 15p people are struggling to see the added benefit and its only the crop of must have the latest technology 'home cinema' guys that are prepared to pay for the Blu-ray experience. This Christmas we should see many more consumers getting their hands on Blu-ray players so expectations are high for a big surge in Blu-ray recordable media in the new year.

Blu-ray media recording compatibility

In terms of recording compatibility, Blu-ray media is compatible with Blu-ray recording hardware only, while playback can be accessed through your Blu-ray player or recording hardware. So look to Verbatim, the media of choice, for capturing your high definition video.

Blu-ray recordable disc is the next-generation optical disc format that was developed to enable recording and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing very large amounts of data for 100 year plus storage. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB, which can be used to record over 2 hours of HDTV or a blu-ray movie. Blu-ray as the name might suggest uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data while current optical disc technologies such as DVD use a red laser. The shorter wavelengths of the Blu-ray technology make it possible to record more data on the same space as a traditional DVD-R disc. The Verbatim Blu-ray discs in particular are safeguarded by Verbatim’s super hard coat which protects against everyday wear and tear. With the rapid growth of High definition television and video, Blu-ray recordable will meet the consumer demand for recording HD programming and is expected to replace VCRs and DVD recorders over the coming years.
